To my inky friend

board-1854180_1280

It’s been quite a long time
Since I last held you
And now you just don’t feel the same
You’re like a long lost friend
The kind I used to know so well
The sort I’d spend every day with
Who I’d laugh and cry with
The kind I’d stay up all night with
Who’d listen and love me for me
Like the friend who was always there
No matter time or day
The sort who cared about everything
Regardless of its true importance
But now things are different
And you feel so unfamiliar
Our connection has sadly faded
And the magic that was once inside you
Seems to have lost its fiery spark
You used to be so mesmerizing
I could stare at you all day long
Your life-giving enchantments saved me
And I wonder why you had to change
You used to write the loveliest things
But like a long lost friend
Who was once as close as a brother
You just aren’t the same as before
I’m afraid the spell has been broken
And the essence of you is surely gone

Like petals wilting in the rain

rose-2596141_1280

Do you ever just feel
That sorrowful ache in your heart
When someone you love
Starts falling apart

It kills you inside
Knowing they’re in pain
It’s this crushing somber feeling
Like petals wilting in the rain

And your heart starts to break
Pieces falling to the floor
There’s nothing you can do
You just can’t save them anymore

For they’ve given up their will
No fight left within
So you wait in the shadows
Silently hoping that they’ll win

But you know the feeling well
Having felt the same way too
All of life’s dismal thoughts
Pressing relentlessly into you

And with that bleak remembrance
Of days that killed you too
You just have to pray
There’s nothing more you can do

Filling in the gaps

summerfield-336672_1280

Filling in the gaps
Life does have its ways
Often sending rays of hope
Even on the darkest of days

And when those unexpected beams
Spread warmth across our faces
It’s happiness we see
And love which embraces

Those gaps no more
A bright sunny future instead
Everything we’d hoped for
Depressive thoughts now dead

If only we could bottle sunshine
And keep it for the days of despair
We’d never be tormented
By even the smallest thought or care

Instead we look for those rays
Hopeful they’ll find us in the dark
For the tiniest amount of hope
Leaves such an impressionable mark

Friends

human-1923298_960_720

They disintegrate like ash
Fluttering away on lofty breezes
I am nothing and they are always something
Something glittery and unattainable
Pieces of a whole that I will never have
Parts of a picture-perfect world that I will never see
There for a split second in time
Then drifting away at warp speed
Friends are often like that
Hold them close while you can

The Secret Key

stones-3364324_960_720

Sometimes you reach a point
Where you must let go
And that’s always hard
When you finally know

But then you just pray
That the hurt will go away
Hopeful that a friend
Will brighten your day

And it doesn’t always happen
But sometimes it does
And the reason doesn’t matter
It’s all just because

So you go on with life
As well as you can
Trusting that someday
You’ll understand

And even if you never do
You trust in the process
Trying to think positive
And not count your losses

And try as you may
You might never again feel whole
In fact you might just hide away
Like a reclusive little mole

But you realize life goes on
And you can’t just feel down
You know you don’t want your smile
To turn into a permanent frown

So you drag yourself to your feet
And you give it all another go
And you tell yourself
That this isn’t all for show

And you trust that you’ll overcome
For you cannot fail
Because you make your mind up
That you will prevail

Because that’s what a strong person does
And they’re the ones who always survive
They hold the key to the greatest secret
The one about being happy just for being alive

And if each of us can grasp this
And find that secret key
We can all be happy
Full of life and living carefree
