Christmastime

Christmastime

Strings of white lights
Strung all around
Soft petaled snowflakes
Falling to the ground
Joyous carolers
Spreading musical cheer
Everyone reminiscing
About another great year
Wide-eyed children
Gathered round each tree
Meeting with Santa
And sitting on his knee
Secret mistletoe kisses
In candlelit rooms
Red poinsettias
Never failing to bloom
Warm eggnog cocktails
And bobble-filled wreaths
Celebrating a season
Full of many beliefs
Garland draped windows
With snowy white scenes
These are the memories
From our childhood dreams

*I’ve decided to start doing more drawings to go with my poems.  I don’t draw nearly enough and I feel like my skills need improving.  So… I am going to do a weekly drawing and write a poem to go with each one.  I guess by deciding this, I’m sort of starting my New Years resolutions early,  What do y’all think?  Any other ideas for how I can improve my drawing skills while still keeping up with my poetry? ~M

Indisposed

All curled up
In a ball on my chair
It’s quiet here
A slight chill in the air

The solitude cradles me
Like a cocoon
I’ve been this way
All afternoon

My mind isn’t right
And I almost feel drugged
Could be I’ve contracted
Some weird, nasty bug

My eyelids flutter
As I drift off again
You’d laugh at the sight
I’m currently in

A view for sore eyes
On a cold winters day
Come visit me again
When I’m feeling okay

Wafts of wintry splendor

Wafts of wintry splendor
roll across my shoes.
Tickling the tip of my nose
anything to amuse.

I giggle at the exchange
between the natural world and me.
Nothing can ever cheer me up
like the earth and all the wonder I see.

Now the winter shivers

kz-2063339_1280

Now the winter shivers
In this barren land.
Near and far the echoes
Without a welcome hand.

Now the winter clamors
As naysayers pave the way.
The vile commence each battle
What more is there to say.

Dimmer than the most atrocious
On the crowning of darkest night.
Sure-footed soldiers march into battle
Prepared for one more fight.

The world lies in anguish
No longer praying for relief.
Smack dab in the pit of sorrow
Buried in inescapable grief.

The rhyme and meter of this poem, were inspired by the poetic works of Edna St. Vincent Millay, who wrote “Autumn Chant,” which can be found here.
